A Centre for Hockey Talent in Cornwall.

TRURO JUNIOR HOCKEY CLUB REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN – CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO

Truro Juniors have consistently proved themselves the most successful junior squad in Cornwall since they began, and many of our senior players have come through the junior ranks and on to play 1st XI hockey at Truro as well as playing for Cornwall. We nurture the best talent in the county under the guidance of Cornwall Hockey Academy Lead Coach – Nigel Barker and are considered to be a centre for hockey talent in Cornwall.

Truro Hockey Club juniors consistently have more players playing in the Cornwall junior sides than any other club in the county.

In addition to that our allumni spans the world with former Truro Junior players going on to National success with College and University teams as well as club level, as well as playing in places as far afield as Holland, the USA and Australia.

We believe that giving kids a good grounding in a sport like Hockey not only helps them develop physically but more importantly emtionally and socially. Unlike some other sports, when you play hockey you are joining a wider hockey family which is competitive on the pitch but shares a deep camoraderie off the pitch.

As coaches we really love seeing how the players develop and grow and there is nothing more rewarding than that moment when they can out-skill you on the pitch.

We have a comprehensive set up at junior level from U8’s that we take to the U14 age group. Most players after that are strong enough to go on and play for the Men’s 5ths and Ladies 2nd XI senior teams, where they grow and develop even further. Here they continue to learn the game with the benefit of some seasoned old hands to guide them.

Our Under 14 Boys compete in the England Hockey West of England 11 a side league and also play in our senior development team.

We also run a Girls Under 16 Squad and Boys Under 16 Squad, also both playing in the England Hockey West Of England Leagues

Newcomers to the club are welcome to join us for a 3 week free trial period during which time their skills are assessed before allocating them to a coaching group. As well as training there may be the opportunity to play in one of our many teams playing matches home and away against other clubs.  We have teams competing in leagues for under 10 boys and girls (mixed), under 12 girls, under 12 boys, under 14 girls and under 14 boys .  We also take part in the Under 16 Mixed League.  The climax to the season for the U10s and U12s is the Cornwall County Championships. The Winners and Runners-Up in each section go on to represent Cornwall in the West Regional Finals in Bristol. Last season all four of our teams qualified.

As well as welcoming new members we are looking for coaches or experienced players to join our coaching team and volunteers to help run the club.

What does my child need?

The main thing your child will need is a gum shield and shin pads, which are mandatory.

They will also need their own hand sanitizer this season that they will be required to use prior to entering the pitch and also to keep on hand to use when they break for a drink.

Astro turf shoes are recommended and your own stick is preferable but if you don’t have one, ask us and we may be able to lend one on a temporary basis.

Due to COVID restrictions, players that want to wear ‘protective face masks’ for penalty corners will need to have their own mask.

Base layers in the winter are recommended as it can get cold. We train in all weather conditions and don’t mind a bit of rain!

Protective hockey gloves can be worn and can help prevent scraped knuckles. Then the usual – shorts/skirt/skort, tracksuit bottoms can be worn if needed, a waterproof jacket/hoodie. Baseball caps and sunglasses can’t be worn during the sessions.

Bring a drink – hockey is a fast paced game and can be thirsty work.

Welfare and safeguarding

If players or parents have any concerns the first point of contact should be your child’s age group coach. If the coach cannot resolve your concern or if you would prefer to express your concerns to someone else then please contact Andie. Andie is normally present throughout the Junior training sessions at Penair.
