Truro Junior Hockey Club is the centre for hockey talent in Cornwall. As a club they have consistently proved themselves the most successful junior squad in Cornwall since they began and many of our senior players have come through the junior ranks and on to play 1st XI hockey at Truro as well as playing for Cornwall.

In addition to that our alumni spans the world with former Truro Junior players going on to National and International success with National League clubs, College and University teams and International Caps.

Players that have gone on to play hockey across the world, in places as far afield as Holland, the USA, New Zealand and Australia started their hockey journey at Truro Junior Hockey Club.

Our Hockey Ethos

We believe that giving kids a good grounding in a sport like Hockey not only helps them develop physically but more importantly emtionally and socially. Unlike some other sports, when you play hockey you are joining a wider hockey family which is competitive on the pitch but shares a deep camoraderie off the pitch.

As coaches we really love seeing how the players develop and grow and there is nothing more rewarding than that moment when they can out-skill you on the pitch.

We have a comprehensive set up at junior level that we now take to the U16 age group.

Many junior players, once they reach 13 or 14 also play in the senior leagues where they grow and develop even further.

Hockey Development

Our male youngsters begin their senior hockey career in the 5th or 4th XI with the female youngsters entering the 3rd or 2nd XI.  These teams all play in the West Hockey League.  This opportunity to play alongside some of our more experienced older players helps develop them even further.

What does my child need?

The main thing your child will need is a gum shield and shin pads, the latter of which are mandatory.

Astro turf shoes are recommended and your own stick is preferable but if you don’t have one, ask us and we should be able to lend one on a temporary basis. Due to COVID restrictions, players that want to wear ‘protective face masks’ for penalty corners will need to have their own mask.

Base layers in the winter are recommended as it can get cold. We train in all weather conditions and don’t mind a bit of rain!

Protective hockey gloves can be worn and can help prevent scraped knuckles. Then the usual – shorts/skirt/skort, tracksuit bottoms can be worn if needed, a waterproof jacket/hoodie.

Baseball caps and sunglasses can’t be worn during the sessions.

Please make sure your child brings a drink in a labelled drinks bottle. Hockey is a fast paced game and can be thirsty work.

Junior Playing Kit

Our junior kit can now be ordered online using the club shop.

We have recently moved to Y1 as our kit supplier. This exciting young brand is already renowned in the hockey world for producing top quality sticks.

The club will supply playing shirts to players on match days. but players will need white shorts or (black shorts or skorts for girls) and white socks.
